Things We Never Got Over by Lucy Score

Publication Date: January 12, 2022

Plot: Bearded, bad-boy barber Knox prefers to live his life the way he takes his coffee: Alone. Unless you count his basset hound, Waylon.

Knox doesn’t tolerate drama, even when it comes in the form of a stranded runaway bride.

Naomi wasn’t just running away from her wedding. She was riding to the rescue of her estranged twin to Knockemout, Virginia, a rough-around-the-edges town where disputes are settled the old-fashioned way…with fists and beer. Usually in that order.

Too bad for Naomi her evil twin hasn’t changed at all. After helping herself to Naomi’s car and cash, Tina leaves her with something unexpected. The niece Naomi didn’t know she had. Now she’s stuck in town with no car, no job, no plan, and no home with an 11-year-old going on thirty to take care of.

There’s a reason Knox doesn’t do complications or high-maintenance women, especially not the romantic ones. But since Naomi’s life imploded right in front of him, the least he can do is help her out of her jam. And just as soon as she stops getting into new trouble he can leave her alone and get back to his peaceful, solitary life.

At least, that’s the plan until the trouble turns to real danger.

MY THOUGHTS:

This book was on my TBR for a LONG time. It was suggested to me by a friend at the beginning of the year, but I kept putting it to the back-burner, mostly due to the hefty length 🤣 But I had another friend freak out on me a few weeks ago because she was mind blown that I hadn't read this one yet—so Miranda, you were SO right. Things We Never Got Over is one of those books that I put off for so long because I was worried it wouldn’t live up to the hype, but it absolutely 1000% did.

I GENUINELY CANNOT EXPRESS HOW MUCH I LOVED THIS BOOK!!

Let me just say, I wanted to savor every page in this book.

I can usually tell when I pick up a book I'm going to LOVE for the first time because I am invested and hooked on the characters' stories from the very beginning, even as you're still getting to know them. I was fully invested from the first chapter. This romance novel has all the tropes I love—grumpy sunshine, enemies to lovers, small-town romance all in one?!?! Throw in the fact that Naomi finds out she has a niece that she never new existed and be expected to become her guardian.

Knox and Naomi were just EVERYTHING!! Knox Morgan...the grumpy, tattooed, overbearing male protagonist but by the end OMG I can't even express how much I loved him. I loved the relationship between Naomi and Waylay (and Knox and Waylay!). I loved the town of Knockemout, and I loved all of the people we got to meet there. I fell in love with every single one of these characters, and I could easily see this becoming a little Netflix rom-com with a touch of drama.

There are just so many good parts in this book that I genuinely head-over-heels enjoyed. How grumpy this man is, the support he gives Naomi, the love and encouragement he gave Waylay. I was in tears for the last 25 pages, but it was all just wrapped up so well!!

The one negative thing that I have to say is that it's a bit too long for my liking, so the story seemed to drag a bit at times, but I listened to part of this book on audio and that helped. But by the time I was halfway through the book, I absolutely couldn't put it down! Overall, I definitely enjoyed this highly-rated book & I'm looking forward to reading more about these characters in the next book coming out in February, Things We Hide from the Light! 🫶🏼
